Abstract: Studies published in 2009 by UN-Habitat (United Nations Programme for Human Settlements) estimate 1 billion in the current population of favelas-slum in the world, which could triple by 2050 if the problem is not faced with the urgency demanded. According to this study, the highest concentration of these communities are in sub-Saharan Africa, where 62% of the urban population lives in these communities, followed by Asia with 43 percent, and East Asia, with 37 percent. In Brazil, the population of these "subnormal agglomerations" grew by almost 40% during the 1990s, reaching six million, five hundred thousand inhabitants in 2006. The slum is only the visible part of residential segregation, the problem stems from the rapid growth of cities and regulation is urgent and necessary. |
