Resumo: This article aims to analyze the “duty of memory” in the novel The Fourth Century, published in 1964 by the Martinican writer ÉdouardGlissant. It intends to highlight, in the novelistic text, the colonial domination and the resistance in Martinique by the observation of the dramas and adventures of four generations of the families Longoue and Béluse, slaves that arrived in Martinique in 1788 during the French colonial company and the slave trade. The novel/saga examines the oral story to tell the local history from the point of view of slaves and their heirs, refusing the soliloquy of the colonizer and the danger of the unique story. It is a matter of weakening the official historiography, testifying ways between the dispossession and the appropriation of the history and celebrating the rehabilitation of the ancestral African voice by means of a griot and a quimboiseur to make emerges the word of yesteryear and the black soul of the Caribbean.---Original in French.

Il s’agit de mettre en évidence le texte romanesque pour étudier la domination coloniale et la résistance en Martinique à partir de l’observation des drames et aventures de quatre générations des familles Longoué et Béluse, esclaves arrivés en Martinique en 1788 pendant l’entreprise coloniale française et la traite esclavagiste. Le roman-saga se penche sur l’histoire orale pour raconter l’histoire locale à partir du point de vue des esclaves et de leurs héritiers, en refusant le soliloque du colonisateur et le danger d’une histoire unique. Il est question de nuancer l’historiographie officielle, de témoigner des chemins entre la dépossession et l’appropriation de l’histoire et de célébrer la réhabilitation de la voix ancestrale africaine par le biais d’un griot et d’un quimboiseur pour faire émerger la parole d’antan et l’âme noire des Caraïbes.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------VOZES DO PASSADO E DEVER DE MEMÓRIA EM O QUARTO SÉCULO, DE ÉDOUARD GLISSANTEste artigo tem como objetivo analisar o “dever da memória” no romance O quarto século, publicado em 1964 pelo escritor martinicano Édouard Glissant. Busca-se estudar a dominação colonial e a resistência na Martinica a partir da observação de dramas e aventuras de quatro gerações das famílias Longoué e Béluse, escravos que atracaram na Martinica em 1788 durante a empreitada colonial francesa e o tráfico negreiro. O romance/saga examina a história oral para contar a história local do ponto de vista dos escravos e seus herdeiros, recusando o solilóquio do colonizador e os perigos da história única.
