Resumo: This paper analyzes the structure and mechanism of the literaries controversies in Brazilian culture of century XIX. It demonstrates that controversy discourse obeyed certain protocol of performance influenced by oral language and rhetoric, calling attention to the intimate relation between this protocol and the kind of reflexive habit that developed in the Brazilian literary system.
