The purpose of this paper is to establish reading hypotheses about João Cabral de Melo Neto's “The last poem”, published in the volume Agrestes, in 1985. Relating it to the moment lived by the poet, the questions that were present in his poetics in the period from the launch of Museu de tudo (1975) to the publication of Agrestes. The journey will take place through the survey of the series to which the book belongs, following the structuring of the volume until the selection of the poem, reading the production after the Museu de tudo. The poem will be analyzed according to its formal structure, materiality and reference to other texts that propose some relationship, either by the order of affections or by familiarity with the Arts. The aim is to establish valid hypotheses for the provisions that drove Cabral's poetics.
