The theme of this thesis is the maternal investment and its relationship with attachment and the organization and sistematization of the social networks and social support (befriending) under the light of evolutionary psychology. Beyond the conceptual discussion, we aimed at identifying how female residents in Rio de Janeiro and Niteroi invest in their children as well as the relationship of this investment with variables of the mothers` family background, their relationship style and the received/perceived social support. The participants of the research were 106 women over 20 years old, of diverse social-economic levels, residents in the state of Rio the Janeiro, and selected for accessibility. The research protocol used in this study was an interview guide concerning the evaluation of social-economic and social-educational data as well as aspects related to reproductive, attachment and present background and the three scales: Adult Attachment Scale, Parental Beliefs and Child-Rearing Practices Inventory and the Social Support Scale, translated, adapted and validated for its use in Brazil. The analyses which concern descriptive characteristics of the group focus on measures of central tendency such as: mean, median, mode and standard deviation. Three cluster analyses were developed in two phases in order to identify features of the group profile and how they are related to each other. The criteria for clusters formation draws on the Scharz s Bayesian Criterion, with an alpha level (or significance level) of 0,05. A correspondence analysis was made so as to obtain a percentual chart of the profiles. Finally, correlações de Pearson were made, which pointed to statistical significant relationships for p<0,05 as well. In general terms, this was a group of working (69,8%) middle class (80,3%) women , in an stable union (72,6%), living in a nuclear family (58,5%). Predominantly they were married women or women who lived with a partner (72,6%), who were raised in a stress free environment (52,9%). The clusters analyses identifyied relationships among the mother`s life history profile, her present situation and parental investment; the ANOVA test showed significant differences in attachment score for the first two variables, but not in parental investment. This study has contributed to understand the dynamics of the process of maternal investment. However, further investigation is necessary to identify cultural patterns and continuity relations
