Resumo: The belowground roots biomass in mangrove forests have been focus recently various studies, as well as other forest systems. This increase in the number of studies is related to the recognition of the capacity that this forest compartment have stock carbon. However it is still clear the low representation of studies of this biomass compartment of mangrove forests when compared to studies on aboveground biomass. But the underground roots can comprise more than half of the biomass of the forest system. The belowground biomass mangrove roots throughout the globe varies between 4.7 t ha-1 and 937.1 t ha-1 with an average of 172.4 t ha-1. While the carbon stock ranged between 1.9 tC.ha-1and 434.8 tC.ha-1, with an average of 75.6 tC.ha-1. For Biological Reserve State of Guaratiba (Rio de Janeiro, RJ - Brazil), where this thesis was carried out, the average carbon stock econtrada of 120.1 tC.ha-1 and biomass 267.9 t.ha-1 lying within the global and latitudinal variation range (10º and 25º). However the highest value of the belowground biomass and respective carbon stock in this study (348.94 tha-1 and 239.63 tC.ha-1) are higher than the higher values found for variation latitudinal range. As in most studies showed in the first part of the thesis, literature review, most of the biomass is found in the first layers of the surface, reaching an average of 50% in the first 0.4 m deep. As well as the contribution of the fine roots (less than 5 mm diameter) on average contribute most (about 80%) of the respective ground biomass and carbon stock, also following the results of other studies. The method used to obtain these estimates was excavate a trench of 1 m³ (1 m width x 1 m length x 1 m depth), being excavated 10 trenches 5 in fringe region and 5 in the basin area, allowing compare the two physiographic types and was verified that there is no statistically significant difference between them in relation to different diameter classes root . The only statistical significative difference between the physiographic types went to the carbon stock in the first layer. The method used in this study provides the collection of all classes and types of roots, giving all an overview of the belowground biomass, however due to their low practicality, was verified the feasibility of sampling to estimate belowground biomass through cores. This method, as seen in the literature review on the subject, is the most used to obtain the values of both belowground biomass and carbon stock associated with this. For such a test were collected 100 cores, 10 cores around each trench. Each core had a depth of 1 m and a diameter of 7 cm. When comparing the total carbon stock estimates obtained by the core method with those obtained by the trenches, no statistically significant difference was observed between the methodologies for both fringe, as for the basin. Therefore, considering the practicality of the cores sampling and the reliability of their results, it is recommended to use this sampling method, which will contribute to the expansion of carbon stock estimates the underground biomass of mangrove forests

Este aumento no número de estudos está relacionado ao reconhecimento da capacidade que esse compartimento da floresta tem de estocar carbono. No entanto ainda é nítido a baixa representatividade dos estudos desse compartimento da biomassa de florestas de mangue, quando comparados aos estudos da parte aérea. Porém as raízes subterrâneas podem comprendem mais da metade da biomassa do sistema florestal. A biomassa de raízes subterrâneas de manguezais ao longo do globo terrestre varia entre 4,7 t.ha-1 e 937,1 t.ha-1, com uma média de 172,4 t.ha-1. Enquanto que o estoque de carbono variou entre 1,9 tC.ha-1 e 434,8 tC.ha-1, com uma média de 75,6 tC.ha-1. Para a Reserva Biológica Estadual de Guaratiba (Rio de Janeiro, RJ Brasil), local onde foi realizada esta tese, a média econtrada do estoque de carbono de 120,1 tC.ha-1 e a biomassa de 267,9 t.ha-1, encontram-se dentro da faixa de variação global e latitudinal (entre 10º e 25º). No entanto o maior valor de biomassa subterrânea e respectivo estoque de carbono encontrado neste estudo (348,94 t.ha-1 e 239,63 tC.ha-1) são superiores aos maiores valores encontrado para a referida faixa latitudinal. Assim como na maioria dos trabalhos, levantados na primeira parte da tese, de revisão bibliográfica, a maior parte da biomassa encontra-se nas primeiras camadas da superfície, chegando em média a 50% nos primeiros 0,4 m de profundidade. Bem como a contribuição da raízes mais finas (com diâmetro menor que 5 mm) contribuem em média com a maior parte (cerca de 80%) da biomassa subterrânea e respectivo estoque de carbono, também acompanhando o resultado de outros estudos. O método usado para obter estas estimativas foi a de escavação de uma trincheira de 1 m³ (1 m de largura X 1 m de comprimento X 1 m de profundidade), sendo escavadas 10 trincheiras, 5 na zona de franja e 5 na zona de bacia, permitindo comparar os dois tipos fisiográficos e verificar que não existe diferença estatística significativa entre as mesmas com relação às diferentes classes de diâmetro de raízes. A única diferença estatística sgnificativa entre os tipos fisiográficos foi para o estoque de carbono no primeiro estrato. O método utilizado neste estudo proporciona a coleta de todas as classes e tipos de raizes, fornencendo um panorama geral da biomassa subterrânea, no entanto em função de sua pouca praticidade, foi testada a viabilidade da amostragem para estimativa de biomassa subterrânea através de testemunhos. Este método, como verificado na revisão bibliográfica sobre o assunto, é o mais utilizado para se obter os valores tanto de biomassa subterrânea, quanto o estoque de carbono associado a esta. Para o referido teste foram coletados 100 testemunhos, 10 testemunhos ao redor de cada trincheira. Cada testemunho tinha uma profundidade de 1 m e um diâmetro de 7 cm. Quando comparadas as estimativas de estoque total de carbono obtidas pelo método de testemunho com as obtidas pelas trincheiras, não foi verificada nenhuma diferença estatisticamente significativa entre as metodologias, tanto para franja, quanto para a bacia.
