This research investigates the ways in which the Islamic State recruits people through violence in countries where the majority of the population is not Muslim. This questioning is justified, for the reason that the cultural context of these countries is totally different from that of the so-called Islamic world. Most people who join the Islamic State, and who can be placed in this category, have very few connections with cultural traits that generally make up the characteristics of those who consider themselves to be practitioners of the Islam. Most of these people, despite being descendants of Muslim immigrants, were raised in an environment considered to be secularized and westernized. In the dispute with the nation-state for the loyalty of these individuals, the Islamic State proposes a radical realignment between governance and the imagined Muslim community. For this, it reinvents historical narratives and builds personifications of antagonism and heroism that are represented by cosmic struggles between the defenders of the faith and its enemies. These clashes are presented as attempts to unite those who share a Muslim identity around the caliphate's political community through bravery and violence. The notion of heroism in International Relations was applied in the Islamic State narratives present in the Dabiq and Rumiyah magazines, and in the Flames of War I and II videos, all aimed at Anglo-speakers. The jihadist organization uses heroism as a way to gather supporters through two characteristics: violence and self-sacrifice. Thus, these specificities, allied to religion, call people willing to imitate the “heroes” of this organization, known as mujahidin, in the cosmic struggle against their enemies: the Crusaders.
