The hypothesis of this thesis was that the Zahar brothers evolved as editors thanks to their experience at Livrarias Editoras Reunidas (LER). To this end, the objective was to understand the formation of a specialized publishing market for university books in the areas of human and social sciences between the years of 1940 and 1960. The research also analyzed the trajectory of the Zahar brothers within the book market of Rio de Janeiro; studied the scenario of circulation of books for university audiences within the context of the creation of the LER Bookstore and Zahar Publishers; and problematized the structures and editorial design of Zahar from 1957 to 1970, thus establishing its trajectory as editor. In order to understand the history of Zahar Editores, the methodology was structured on two pillars: the analysis of the newspapers of the time and the reconstruction of the catalog of edited books. Our analysis evidenced the performances and participation of Zahar in two crucial moments for the book market: the importation of books and the translation. There was a profitable production of twentytwo collections that gradually became references in several areas.
