Breastfeeding is a phenomenon that accompanies human life, preserving biological and social characteristics, however, historically, has been related to women. The social role of the father man in this process has not been studied enough. This research on the social representations of fathers about breastfeeding had as objective to analyze the social representations and practices of fathers about breastfeeding. Method: This is an exploratory, descriptive study with a qualitative approach, based on the Theory of Social Representations. The analyzed sample was composed by 103 fathers accompanying the mother of their child at a public maternity-hospital located in the city of Rio de Janeiro. For data collection, a questionnaire was used to characterize the subjects and a semi-structured interview script. The interviews were recorded and transcribed. Data from questionnaires were analyzed by descriptive statistic and the interviews through the thematic/cathegorial content analysis, exploring the representational contents and the father s practice on breastfeeding. Results: the studied sample is characterized by: predominantly young men, biological parents of the baby, primiparous, married, live with their wives or they are in a stable union and reside with their family. The main source of information on breastfeeding was through the health professionals inserted in an institutional health context; the mothers were in the pratice of exclusive, mixed or partial breastfeeding in the immediate postpartum period. In the analysis of the interviews emerged three categories: father s practice on breastfeeding, father s knowledge about breastfeeding, feelings, frustration and idealization expressed in breastfeeding. These categories reveal that the father values breastfeeding as necessary to the baby, and he considers to be included in the same concept, and envisage ways of operating that inclusion. The father s reports suggest a close and present group during breastfeeding. Thus, it was possible to describe and discuss types of knowledge, attitudes, feelings and images which participate in the father s social representation in relation to breastfeeding. We come to the conclusion that the father occupies a place of translator of the knowledge and common sense built by the families and also the technical knowledge relayed by the health professionals about breastfeeding, revealing to possess a partial knowledge interfering in a negative or positive way on the breastfeeding experience
