Resumo: Orthodontic malocclusions associated with transverse deficiency are found in patients of different ages. The treatment of these cases is challenging because of the uncertainty regarding the existence of potential for remaining growth. Rapid maxillary expansion has been frequently used in orthodontic practice and the success of this therapy is associated with the fusion stage of the midpalatal suture. This retrospective study aims to analyze, through Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) sections, the correlation between the maturation stage of the cervical vertebrae (CVM) and the midpalatal suture stages (MPSS) in patients from the School of Dentistry, State University of Rio de Janeiro. To analyze the correlation, a total of 100 patients, aged between 9 and 53 years old, were included in the sample. The data were analyzed using the Spearman correlation with a significance level of 0.05. The correlation coefficient between the CVM stage and the MPS maturation in the total sample was r=0.658 (P<0.001). When compared by sex, there was a correlation of r=0.638 and 0.697 for females and males, respectively (P<0.001). The results demonstrated that the correlation between the CVM and the MPS was positive, but at a moderate level. The analysis of cervical vertebrae can be used up to the maturational stage CS3. Computed tomography of the maxilla for individuals with stages higher than the CS3 can help to define the therapeutic management of RME.

Seu tratamento é desafiador devido ao potencial existente ou não de crescimento remanescente. Sendo a expansão rápida da maxila um procedimento terapêutico realizado com certa frequência e sabendo-se que o sucesso desta terapia está relacionado ao estágio de fusão da sutura palatina mediana. O objetivo deste trabalho retrospectivo foi avaliar através de cortes de tomografias computadorizadas, a correlação do estágio de maturação das vértebras cervicais (CVM) com a maturação da sutura palatina mediana (SPM) em pacientes da Clínica de Especialização em Ortodontia da Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro. Para realizar a correlação, foram selecionados 100 pacientes de idade entre 9 a 53 anos. Os dados foram analisados pelo teste de correlação de Spearman com nível de significância de 0,05. O coeficiente de correlação entre o estágio CVM e a maturação MPS, na amostra total, foi de r=0,658 (P<0,001). Quando comparados por sexo, apresentou uma correlação de r=0,638 e 0,697, no sexo feminino e sexo masculino, respectivamente (P<0,001). Os resultados demonstraram que a correlação entre CVM e MPS foi positiva, porém em nível moderado. A análise das vértebras cervicais pode ser utilizada até o estágio maturacional CS3.
