Resumo: | The prolongation of cohabitation between parents and sons is a phenomenon that has been documented in Brazil and in several countries, being the subject of media reports and the academy. Social changes have impacted on family arrangements and the subjective construction of its members so our analysis goes through a psychosocial prism, considering differences in context. The complexity of the phenomenon is highlighted and in this paper we make a choice of analysis with a focus on intergenerational transmission and differentiation of self. Based on a review of what in Brazil has been called the “kangaroo generation”, we identified a contradiction between the allegations of blocking the development of sons that prolong cohabitation with their parents and the reports of good quality in living together and respecting individuality. Our hypothesis is that this prolonged cohabitation is not an impediment to the development of emotional autonomy. The objective is to investigate the differentiation of self and intergenerational transmission, existing in both children and cohabiting parents, with implications for family dynamics. The mixed methodology is divided into two stages: In the first, quantitative, we applied a sociodemographic questionnaire and the Self-R Differentiation Inventory to two groups of sons between 25 and 35 years old, the first of sons who live with their parents and the second group of sons who have left the parents' house in order to compare the score of the differentiation of self and its subscales. The analysis of these results is done by the test-t of independent samples. In the second stage, the qualitative one, we interviewed, with the co-construction of the genogram, two families with cohabiting parents and children, using the same criteria as the first group in the first stage, with all family members participating at the same time. Data analysis was done by evaluating the sociodemographic questionnaire and scores of differentiation of self in each family and also through content analysis of the two interviews. From the results of both analyzes, we identified that the differentiation of self in groups of young cohabiting and non-cohabiting young people is practically the same, indicating that cohabitation would not be such a relevant aspect for the development of emotional autonomy. On the other hand, the families surveyed in the second stage had a low score of differentiation of self which indicates an emotional fusion, mainly between mothers and sons, what suggests that exists differentiation difficulty. We also identified values transmitted intergenerationally which influences how they are living together. On the other hand, we identified that these sons have relative autonomy, which partially corroborates our hypothesis and point to the need for further studies on this subject, in order to better identify the factors involved in the process of differentiation of self and emotional autonomy. |

Submitted by Mariangela CEH/A (marianfig@gmail.com) on 2022-03-30T14:11:47Z No. of bitstreams: 2 Dissertação - Fabio Souza Ramos - 2020 - Completa.pdf: 2804856 bytes, checksum: 0b9f852de0591a99e107c408a3ae5df3 (MD5) license_rdf: 0 bytes, checksum: d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2022-03-30T14:11:47Z (GMT).
