The prenatal period is a time of physical and psychological preparation for birth and motherhood, and as such, is a time of intense learning and opportunity for professionals in the health care team to develop education as a dimension of caregiving. The Ministry of Health recommends that the obstetric and neonatal care provided by health services should have the essential characteristics of receptiveness, quality and humanization; the professional must be a vehicle to provide the pregnant woman with autonomy in action, increasing the ability to face stressing situations and crises, and to decide on her life and health. Among the procedures of prenatal care, special importance must be given to a set of guidelines on issues related to care during pregnancy and the baby care, ranging from recommendations for breastfeeding to those relating to the use of medications during pregnancy. This is possible only when the professional listens to complaints and questions submitted by women. This research aims to analyze the women's perceptions of the care they received during prenatal care, childbirth and postpartum care practices, to evaluate health care directed to receptiveness, humanization and integral care, and to know the representations on receptiveness, humanized and comprehensive care provided by health professionals envolved in the women s care. Finally, we analyze the professional performances on the needs and practices in meeting those women s real demands. The analysis compared the narratives of women with the guidelines recommended for prenatal care in connection with the construction of integral care and the empowerment of women. The narratives of the interviewees showed a lack of systematization in prenatal care, with great diversity of attitudes of professionals. Many issues which should be the subject of conversation during the prenatal period were not treated during the sessions, and several women used other sources of information other than health services for their doubts. In conclusion, we highlight the difficulty of engaging more effectively with the guidelines outlined in pre-natal care, and based on the clues obtained during the work, we seek to indicating possible key factors for overcoming this difficulty.
