The present aims to study the “working conditions and health problems of nursing professionals working in a cardiology intensive care unit”. Objective: to evaluate the health problems of nursing professionals and their relationship with working conditions in a cardiology intensive care unit of a university hospital. Method: quantitative, cross-sectional, descriptive and exploratory. The field was an intensive care unit for cardiovascular surgery at a university hospital located in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The sample consisted of 53 nursing workers using the following inclusion criteria: professionals working in the sector for at least 6 months and working shifts (day and night). Workers who did not work in shifts, managers and those on vacation, sick leave and other absences were excluded. Approved by the Research Ethics Committee. Data collection was performed using the following instruments: sample characterization; Identification of Risk Factors in the Workplace; and Health Problems Perceived by Workers (BOIX; VOGEL, 1997), adapted by M. Mauro and C. Mauro (2009). Descriptive statistics was applied. Results: the sample consisted mainly of nursing technicians, female, married, aged over 46 years and with a salary between 3 and 5 minimum wages, with a temporary work contract who worked in the sector for three years, fulfilling a weekly workload of 30 and above 40 hours when considering other links. The most frequent risks perceived by workers were: exposure to biological risks (blood and derivatives), chemical (contact with chemical substances), physical (x-ray, noise, gases, vapors), ergonomic (falling of materials, forced posture, effort physical, work overload, long working hours, fast pace of work, insufficient material resources, repetitive work and low growth prospects). Among the health problems were: stress, sleep disorders, changes in mood and behavior, frequent headaches, musculoskeletal and eye problems, varicose veins and muscle fatigue. Conclusion: because it is a cross-sectional study and because statistical tests were not performed with the objective of verifying the association between the variables, it is concluded that risk factors and working conditions can contribute to or worsen health problems. reported, especially when considering the current workloads, long hours, double employment, in addition to other variables. There is a need for preventive measures in order to minimize risks, promote health and quality of life at work. As a result, there is an improvement in care and job satisfaction.
