The objective of this study are the perceptions of the leaders of the nursing category on the political struggles undertaken against the precariousness of nurses' working conditions. To do so, the following objectives were drawn: i) to identify the nursing leaders' point of view on the precariousness of nursing work conditions and professional ties; ii) to describe the demands of the profession for better working conditions and professional ties; iii) analyze the barriers and challenges of nursing leaderships on meeting the demands for better working conditions and professional ties; and iv) discuss the actions, strategies and interventions of nursing leaderships for better working conditions. In this study, the following entities are taken as nursing leaders: the Nurses' Union of Rio de Janeiro (SindEnfRJ), the Brazilian Nursing Association section of Rio de Janeiro (ABEn-RJ) and the Regional Nursing Council (Coren-RJ). The methodological design is a qualitative research of descriptive and exploratory type. The scenario of the study is the headquarters of the selected nursing leaders. The participants are 17 nurses, current or former members of the boards of these entities. Data collection took place through interviews and documental analysis. The data treatment was performed using the Content Analysis technique. The results show that, in the view of the participants, nursing is little involved in the political struggles because it is a predominantly female profession, with multiple work hours - domestic and professional - and with workers from lower economic classes with little involvement with political issues. It is also noted that the current political scenario has strengthened the precariousness of nursing work, but the interviewed understand that the leaderships continue to develop actions and strategies to minimize such precariousness; however they emphasize the low mobilization of the category. Another result that emerges are the conflicts and tensions between class entities, which do not want to divide political spaces and power, further weakening the struggles of the profession for better working conditions. The conclusion is that nursing has advanced in its historical process of professional training, but there are still many barriers to overcome. Training with critical reflexion is the main strategy to ensure engagement with political struggles and to strengthen class entities to act in favor of better working conditions.
