The present dissertation aims to problematize the possible repercussions of the money payment relationship in the psychotherapeutic relationship. To this end, the course of the research takes place in a bibliographic review divided in two parts: first, approaching psychotherapy and the psychotherapeutic relationship; then, money payments and contemporary capitalism. Considering western’s psychotherapy historical constitution and its main theoretical branches, the notions of therapeutic relationship as Carl Rogers, Rollo May and Irvin Yalom, three authors from the third force in Psychology, develop in their written works, are presented. Then, the payment relations are addressed, highlighting their historical construction and the specificities that they assume in the contemporary world. Finally, a critical reflection on the interaction between the therapeutic relationship and money payment is undertaken. Analyzing this interaction to the light of the elements in the previous review, inconsistencies can be noted between the assumptions regarding the therapeutic relationship and the characteristics of money payments to psychotherapy sessions, as well as possible prejudices and benefits derived from the payment’s existence and configuration to the relationship.
