Summary: This dissertation is an intelectual biography of the Pará writer, journalist and politician Filippe Alberto Patroni Martins Maciel Parente. Although well known for taking part in Pará's support of the Porto Revolution, little research has been done into his life and career after this. It is our purpose to fill this gap with the present work, and to rescue the historical meaning of his deeds in the first half of the 19th century national political scenery. With this in mind, his thoughts have been divided into three distinct phases: constitutionalist, utopic and messianic, in such a way that in each one it is possible to find a specific way in which Patroni dealt with Brazilian social and political problems. The bringing of his work back to the fore unveils the space religious permanences had at the dawn of national political modernity.

Embora muito conhecido por sua participação na adesão do Pará à Revolução do Porto, pouco se estudou sua trajetória posterior a este evento, de modo que essa pesquisa pretendeu sanar tal lacuna, resgatando o sentido histórico de sua atuação no cenário político nacional da primeira metade do século XIX. Nesse sentido, procedeu-se a uma divisão esquemática de seu pensamento em três fases distintas: constitucionalista, utópica e messiânica, de tal modo que em cada uma pode ser observada uma maneira específica encontrada por Patroni para lidar com a resolução dos problemas sociais e políticos brasileiros.
