The following dissertation is a qualitative study whose subject-matter is the practice of the obstetrical nurse in the user embracement module from the Cegonha Carioca Program. The objectives are: to describe the strategies of the public administration for the implementation of the user embracement module from the Cegonha Carioca Program and to discuss the practice of the obstetrical nurse in the user embracement module from the Cegonha Carioca Program. The study has its bases on the notion of praxis, common knowledge and common sense. The used analysis method was the dialectical hermeneutics. Semi-structured interviews happened in the period from January to March 2013. The interviewees are three superintendents of Children s and Maternity Hospitals responsible for the creation and implementation of the Carioca Program; thirteen obstetrical nurses that worked at the user embracement module from the Cegonha Carioca Program, being sixteen interviews in overall. After the data analysis two main categories emerged: The implementation of the user embracement module from the Cegonha Carioca Program and The practice of the obstetrical nurse in the user embracement module from the Cegonha Carioca Program . The results indicated that there was a favorable political context to the implementation of the Cegonha Carioca Program and that the triggering factor for its implementation was a case of fetal death that occurred in the Rio de Janeiro City that had a big media repercussion. The strategies adopted by the public administration for the implementation of the user embracement module were: linking the prenatal care to a reference Maternity Hospital; the reorganization of the City s obstetric emergencies and the insertion of the obstetrical nurse in the user embracement module. From the insertion of the obstetrical nurses into the Emergency Room of the City s Maternity Hospitals it was possible to identify some practices used by these nurses in the user embracement module: user embracement, priority assessment, post-assessment care and rounds through the maternity ward. It can be seen that the practice of the obstetrical nurse in the user embracement module is a continuous praxis and that despite being guided by the humanization it suffers a strong influence of the hegemonic biomedical model.
