The thesis principally aims at analyzing the structuring, the preparation and the actions of the Military Police of Rio de Janeiro (PMRJ) during the Military Regime. From 1964 on, the Military Polices, being more closely subordinate to the Army, went through major changes in their structure and in their developed activities, acting mainly as a militarized force along with the Armed Forces and secondly as a traditional police force. Although the Police and the Army had their own trajectories in the process of the construction of modern states, with distinct objectives, rationale and practices, the Brazilian Military Police comprised elements of the above-mentioned armed force and of the police agency, bringing together in its structure the duties of an ostensive patrolling and of the so-called military routines, which enabled, in the case of the PMRJ, its participation in different episodes of political history of Brazil. It was in this perspective that the level of political involvement of the Institution, the military policemen and their participation in the power were thought. Our goal was, therefore, understand the trajectory of PMRJ as a State coercive force that, related to a legal authoritarian apparatus and based on theories and practices considered to be legitimate, had a leading role in one of the most darkest periods of the history of Brazil.
