Bispo do Rosário Arte Contemporânea Museum can be found at Instituto Municipal de Assistência à Saúde Juliano Moreira, formerly known as Colônia Juliano Moreira, a psychiatric institution in Rio de Janeiro. Given the name Nise da Silveira Museum until the year 2000, the Colônia museum was created by artist Maria Amélia Mattei in 1982, following the discovery of abandoned paintings inside the central administration building. Since then, the museum has offered a link between psychological practice and psychological knowledge in what mental health is concerned. That can be justified by the fact that the museum witnessed the transformations that the institution went through after the Psychiatric Reform movement taking place in Brazil from the late 1970's. In that context, the museum had a role in Brazilian history of psychology, when old knowledge and new knowledge created an intense dispute against one another. A historical survey was organized in order to determine which psychological pratices and knowledge had actually been responsible for the creation of the museum and which ones had given the base for the activities taking place in the museum through the years. Therefore, this thesis aims to understand the context and the influences that had an impact on the creation of an art museum inside a psychiatric institution. In order to do so, references in this domain have been selected, such as artistic experimentation that became an established psychological practice in the 1950's, due mostly to Nise da Silveira's and Osório César's work. It should also be noted that Colônia Juliano Moreira has had a significant amount of artistic pieces made by mental patients in that same period through praxitherapy. Also, their work of art represented the first art collection of the museum. In a second part of the thesis, the role of culture and art was analyzed in the context of the Psychiatric Reform, searching to understand how a museum could be created inside a psychiatric institution at that time. Finally, this paper seeked to understand how the psychological practices and knowledge have established a dialogue with Bispo do Rosário Museum, allowing this institution to become a museum of contemporary art
