Introdution: The benefits of breastfeeding are numerous, being important in the short and the long term, bringing protection to both, breastfeeding woman as for breast fed child. However, its duration is less than proposed by world health organization, which recommends exclusive breastfeeding until the 6 months of age of the child and the complemented breastfeeding for 24 months or more. The practice of breastfeeding is influenced by different factors, including social support. Objectives: to estimate the association between social support and their dimensions and the prevalence of breastfeeding in different stages of baby development. Methods: Cross sectional study with women participating at the first wave of Pró-Saúde study in 1999 (n=1,634), where a self filled questionnaire was applied. It analysed breastfeeding prevalences at 6, 9, 12 and 24 months of age. Social support was measured with a validated scale adapted to the Brazilian population, evaluating three dimensions: social/affective, information/emotional and material. It estimated the odds ratio with confidence interval of 95% by logistic regression model, adjusted for confounders and having social support as main exposure: one model was estimated having social support in two categories (high/low) and other with the three dimensions. Results: prevalence of breastfeeding was 61.3% and 34.7% at 6 and 9 months of life, respectively, and were associated with high social support (p = 0.025 e p = 0.026, respectively). Considering the social support dimensions, social/affective interaction was statistically and positively associated with breastfeeding at 6 months of life (OR = 1.81 CI 95% = 1.19-2.75). Conclusion: social support may have a special role to protect breastfeeding in the first months of life
