Resumo: This study is about an ethnographic revisit conducted in the field previously studied by Maxine Margolis, an American anthropologist who has conducted a pioneering research on Brazilians in New York in the 1990s. Sixty interviews with Brazilians were made over a four-month period in four regions of the New York metropolitan area in 2013. The research aimed to analyze the main continuities and changes in the lives of Brazilians, the structuring of networks and the migrant experience, on the assumption that events like the September 11 attacks, the international financial crisis and the Brazilian economic growth affected directly and indirectly this population. These changes, however, are also part of the transition and instability context of the present time, characterized by the emancipatory process of individualization and the paradox of mobility, which is defined by closed x fluid borders, that is, between increasingly restrictive migration policies on the one hand, and an intense flow of capital, money, goods, services, people, information, technologies, policies, ideas, images and regulations that transcend the nation-state and dissolve its borders, on the other. The study initially begins from three main authors: Maxine Margolis, as the basis of the ethnographic comparative analysis through the revisit; the Algerian sociologist who was settled in France, Abdelmalek Sayad, through his classical contributions on the intrinsic paradoxes of the migrant experience; and the British sociologist Michael Burawoy, through the incorporation of external forces and the historical context as essential elements of analysis. The chapters were composed so that the macrosociology system could be complemented by microanalysis of the lifeworld. Initially, topics are developed to help us understand who are these Brazilians, where they are, why do they leave Brazil and how are the processes of adaptation and integration into the American society. Then, we discuss the return, the second generation and, finally, the paradoxes of migration contained in the tension between territoriality, globalization and technology. Through this journey, we can see certain patterns that allow us to point out trends of the Brazilian migration and analyze the migratory phenomenon in a broadest sense.

Submitted by Boris Flegr (boris@uerj.br) on 2021-01-07T18:50:23Z No. of bitstreams: 1 tese Marina Tomassini Panosso.pdf: 2265074 bytes, checksum: 689bede57e0163389d8b1acb1714b45e (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2021-01-07T18:50:23Z (GMT).
