Representações sociais e construção da identidade de cabo-verdianos no Rio de Janeiro: estudantes, imigrantes e descendentes

This research is about the social representations of Capeverdian people living in Rio de Janeiro concerning several aspects that are implied in the process of construction o f their identities, in the crossing of cultures and identities from Brazil and Cape Verd. It was done a comparative study involving three groups of Capeverdian living in Rio de Janeiro. The interviews carried through 20 students, 20 immigrants and 10 descendents, Brazilian children of Capeverdian who live in Brazil allowed to identify more specific, diversified and detailed contents of the representations constructed by them concerning Brazil and Brazilian people. It was also possible to identify their own relations with the shelter and native countries, as well, with its respective peoples, what, in last analysis, form the social identities that they will have reconstructed during their staying on this side of - or better, part of - the Atlantic Ocean. The theory of the social representations developed by Serge Moscovici (1961) constituted in a valuable theoretical support for this study. By means of a comparative research of the social representations of different Capeverdian groups in Rio de Janeiro concerning several aspects of their social and cultural contexts both origin and shelter, it was possible to understand the complex process of construction, reconstruction and updating of their identities. It is what we believe to have demonstrated relating their trajectories of the students and Capeverdian immigrants, as well as the history of life of their children in Brazil and, in this context, in Rio de Janeiro. It is in this perspective that the Capeverdian in Rio de Janeiro considered both subject as object of social representation in this research - has constructed a knowledge - at the same time, practical and reflective - of their insertion in the Brazilian and Carioca contexts, through face to face contact regarding the receiving society and, in the case of two of these groups (students and immigrants), from the representations that they had already elaborated in the native country, under the influence of mass media. Thus, on the basis of the cultural and identity hybridization of Capeverdian, we intended to understand in a wider and detailed form the process of (re)construction of identities of students, immigrants and their descendants in Rio de Janeiro. Such changes were more visible in the social convivialities where Capeverdian participate in different social spaces of this city, in their houses and associations, in which participate not only Capeverdian, but also some Brazilian and other African people. In these convivialities, differences of relationship among them are noticed, where small groups are formed occurring an intensification of identity and representational approaches. The changes observed superficially among students are, therefore, more intense among immigrants due to the long period and daily frequency of communication and the exchange of experiences with more varied levels of the Brazilian population, coming closer to an authentic cultural fusing. Otherwise, it was noticed that the immigrant community lost some important elements of the Capeverdian culture, such as the creole language. The loss of creole represents a discontinuity in the reproduction of the identity for these immigrants in Brazil. In such way, the descendents, that is, children of caboverdian parents had not had access to this powerful instrument of communication and preservation of caboverdiana culture. The immigrants consider themselves as successful people and have a positive evaluation of their lives in Brazil. At the same way, the students consider themselves satisfied due to the chance to study in Brazil, what represents a collective desire which came true because school education is widely valued in their native country.
