Cognitive processes underlying the meaning of Brazilian Sign Language - Libras signs in evaluative statements are investigated based on studies related to Libras grammar (FERREIRA-BRITO,1995; QUADROS; KARNOPP, 2004; FELIPE, 2007) and the following theoretical assumptions of Cognitive Linguistics: embodiment thesis, image schema (LAKOFF, 1987), conceptual metaphor and metonymy (LAKOFF; JOHNSON, 1980), extended conceptual metaphor theory (KÖVECSES, 2020a), theory of mental spaces (FAUCONNIER; TURNER, 2002) and cognitive iconicity (WILCOX, 2004; NUNES, 2014). In this research, we continued the work carried out at Master's level by Sessa (2018), in which cognitive processes were described in dictionary signals linked to human emotions. The results obtained in the dissertation motivated us to continue the investigation; Therefore, for the doctoral thesis, we studied evaluative statements in the language in use. Thus, through qualiquantitative research with an exploratory descriptive approach, a total of fifty signs were analyzed, twenty-six of which were taken from statements found in two YouTube videos, which are presented by a couple of deaf brothers. The other twenty-four are signs investigated in a previous study, whose analysis was revisited and deepened. The results showed that there may be a metonymic stage that precedes the activation of conceptual metaphors at levels. Metonymic projections may be more linked to the phonological pole than to the semantic one.
