Os quatro elementos na experiência geográfica: uma apreciação humanista e astrológica em geografia

The goal of the present paper is to approach the four elements earth, water, air and fire through the lens of geography, astrology and philosophy as instruments that enable the relationship between the human being and the Earth. In the astrological concept, the four elements are symbols of the basic manners of men to experience the environment and its components, what is called conscience functions, they are the sensation, the sentiment, the thought and the intuition, so the element earth represents the sensation, the element water represents the sentiment, the element air represents the thought and the element fire represents the intuition. The methodology of this paper consists in a bibliographic research in humanistic and cultural geography, astrology, philosophy and psychology subjects;besides the empiric qualitative and exploratory research performed at Serra dos Órgãos National Park, where it was performed an experimental practice with volunteers.The experimental practice was performed since the volunteers contact with the four elements earth, water, air and fire (sun) in the nature and the fulfillment of an individual questionnaire made with four open questions for the description of the experience of each element, related to the perception (sensation and intuition) and the interpretation (thought and sentiment)of each one of the four elements.The goal of the empiric research was to verify if the answers of the volunteers related to the four elementshad correlation with the symbolic conception of the four elements in astrology, in the philosophy of Bachelard and in the geography of Dardel. Then, it was observed that the perceptions and interpretations of the volunteers have correlation with the astrological, philosophical and geographical symbology of the four elements. In accordance with the bibliographic and empiric researches, there are evidences that the geographical, philosophical and astrological conceptions of the four elements are presents in collective imagination and that in accordance with these conceptions, the individual relates with his or her environment and the Earth.
