A modalidade em editoriais e artigos de opinião: uma abordagem sistêmico-funcional

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the linguistic features which are indicative of the discursive category of modality in textual genres of the printed media. The theoretical basis of our research is the functional approach supported by M. A. K. Halliday, whose linguistic theory aims at identifying the specific language structures which contribute to the meaning of a text. We bear in mind that it is through modality, interpersonal resource according to Halliday (2014), that the speaker emits judgement or attributes value in different levels. Therefore, we have chosen, as our “corpus”, opinion articles and editorials published intercaletedly in the newspaper O GLOBO from October 09th, 2017 till July 23rd, 2018, totalling twelve editorials and twelve opinion articles. They are texts published periodically in the section Tema em Discussão, a section in which topics of social relevance are discussed and in which we can contrast the institutional opinion of the editor in an editorial and the personal viewpoint of an expert in an opinion article. Our choice of such genres, opinion articles and editorials, is based on the fact that argumentative texts are the ideal linguistic environment for the presence of the discursive category of modality. Taking this ‘corpus” into consideration, this research aims at verifying if there is a substantial difference between the textual genres under analysis as regards the use of modality resources. This is due to the fact that both genres in question present distinct characteristics regarding the context in which they are produced. The author of the opinion article is free to present his point of view and his subjectivity, whereas the editor faces a number of restrictions imposed not only by the genre structure in itself, but also by the political and commercial policies adopted by the Company he represents. The comparative study of the modality resource in the genres under analysis in this paper enables us to better understand such a resource in argumentative texts
