O global e o local no subúrbio carioca: o caso do Engenho de Dentro

This study proposed the analyze of the Rio district, named Engenho de Dentro, as an area that has been receiving successive urban interventions, in a wide context of a strategic plan developed to the city of Rio de Janeiro since the nineties, following a global paradigm of urban administration and organization, which the main strategy is the preparation of a sport mega-event (2014 World Cup). In order to understand the formation context of Rio suburbs and, directly, of the district and its territorialities, it was investigated some aspects of the process of occupation in the studied area, which has on the Estrada de Ferro D. Pedro II inauguration, in 1858, its great mark. It was verified the importance of the railway tradition to the formation of the identity that made the district known as “railroaders’ district”. The urban interventions such as the construction of Linha Amarela (1997), João Havelange Olympic Stadium (2007) and Viaduto da Abolição (initiated in 2011) have been generating many impacts on Engenho de Dentro district. The objectives of these interventions were analyzed, as well as the nature of the impacts caused by them, and it was found they have been causing new territorialities formation as they are destined to attend needs which are local reality, which shows the presence of globalization vector expressed by this sport mega-event. Considering that the local and global interests have been finding a challenging space at the district, and the State with its urban administration strategy has been beneficiating global interests over local ones, it must to confirm the supposition that Engenho de Dentro residents have been being treated with indifference by the government, the situation has affected traditional territorialities of the area. The general objective of this study consists effectively on verifying several territorialities conflicted in the studied area.
