This is a qualitative and descriptive study, developed according to the Social Representation Theory. It has as object the social representation of the Single Health System principles, according to its users. The general objective is to analyze the social representation of Single Health System principles from the health unit users in Rio de Janeiro. The specific objectives are: describe the social representation contents of Single Health System principles according the users; characterize the users perceptions and images about SUS and its relationship with the principles and discuss about how Nursing can help giving a bigger sight from this principles for the users. Thus, this study involved five health institutions located in Rio de Janeiro city. The participants of the study were 104 users, being 20 from each of the five health institutions and 24 in only one. The collecting data instrument was a half-structured interview, and an identification questionnaire of the participants. The data analysis was done according Bardin s contents analysis technical and procedures proposed by Oliveira (2002). It was found eighty-six themes, composed for 3.088 register units and, from this, emerged five categories: 1-Health Rights and Universal Access; 2-Hierarchy and Reference System; 3- Single Health System`s images; 4- Social Participation Principle; 5- Full Health Actions Principle. In the first category, there is knowledge about health as universal right and State responsibility, as well the right to Universal Access. The second category shows that users don t know hierarchy network principle like yours, and they also identify Single Health System working through actions and services in reference system. The third category presented images like: Single Health System is to poor people; people are afraid of Single Health System, it s wonderful but doesn t work , misfortune and so bad images, which can help facing and accepting day-by-day in public health services assistance. In the fourth category users identify the social participation assistance in the existence or not of participation proceedings. There is a perception about that is necessary to have a bigger participation from the population in health policy process. In the fifth category users say how they feel the full health actions principle, as well a not continuous assistance in public health. So, nursing professionals must know the users necessity, once that the introducing and implementing of Single Health System require a so long way. This study can still help with the users nursing assistance in Single Health System, which is fragile in face of so many illness procedures that has been lived and has a little appropriating about the organizing and working in Single Health System.
