This dissertation aims to investigate the construction, between 1983 and 1984, of the Passarela Professor Darcy Ribeiro, popularly called Sambódromo, on Avenida Marquês de Sapucaí, on downtown zone of Rio de Janeiro. From the research with news from Jornal do Brasil, between 1977 and 1984, I seek to understand how the carioca carnival was the target of disputes and negotiations around defining the directions and forms of the party. For more, I seek to understand how a moment in social life, whose collective imagination is marked by the idea of inversion or subversion of the daily order, has been the target of extensive discussions regarding its order. Since the demolition of the old Praça Onze de Julho, in 1941, samba schools have had no fixed space for their parades. For 42 years, the city's greatest artistic expression moved through various temporary walkways. In light of the growth of the samba school parades, which, throughout the 1950s and 1960s, attracted more and more revelers, the samba schools carnival started to demand a huge effort to organize and reconcile the impacts of the party in the city. By poring over the events surrounding the construction of the Sambódromo and the organization of the 1984 parades, during the government of Leonel Brizola and vice-governor Darcy Ribeiro, I intend to reflect on the tensions surrounding the work and the organization of the carnival and how they were, throughout the process, producing the city, public space and party.
