Resumo: | Ultrasonography has been used to determine muscle thickness in studies of resistance training. Its operational simplicity, low cost when compared to other methods, and its ease of image evaluation make it very attractive in laboratory environments, clinics, and sports clubs. However, it is necessary to determine the quality of the measure so that the effect of an intervention can be attributed primarily to treatment and less to measurement error. Thus, the present dissertation was divided into two complementary review studies. Study 1 aimed to determine the validity, reliability and measurement error of quadriceps femoris muscle thickness obtained by ultrasonography in healthy adults. A search was performed in Pubmed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases until April 2022. Risk of bias was determined using the COSMIN tool. Twenty-seven studies were eligible for review. The muscle thickness of the quadriceps femoris obtained by ultrasound was valid, reliable, and had low measurement errors in healthy adults. The weighted mean of the relative error was 6.5%. Study 2 aimed to determine the magnitude and time of intervention of resistance training necessary to generate adaptations in quadriceps muscle thickness obtained by ultrasonography in healthy adults. A search was performed in Pubmed, Web of Science and Scopus databases until March 2022. The methodological quality of the studies was determined using the TESTEX scale and the risk of bias was determined using the Cochrane’s RoB 2.0 tool. For the meta-analysis, the inverse of the variance with a fixed effect model was used, reported by the standardized mean difference (SMD) with a confidence interval of 95%. Ten studies were eligible for meta-analysis. The overall analysis of the studies showed a SMD = 0.35 [95% CI: 0.13 - 0.56] (P = 0.002), with low heterogeneity of I2 = 0% (P = 0.52). No publication bias was detected using the funnel plot followed by the Egger test (P = 0.06). The degree of certainty of the meta-analysis was high according to the GRADE tool. Resistance training generated a significant mean increase of 16.6% in quadriceps femoris muscle thickness obtained by ultrasound in healthy adults. However, a significant effect size was only observed after 8 weeks of intervention. Protocols with intensities of 70 to 80% of 1RM, with intervals of 60 to 90 seconds between sets and performed 2 to 3 times a week obtained better results in the outcome variable. From studies 1 and 2, it is concluded that the magnitude of the relative error of muscle thickness of 6.5%, found in study 1, was smaller than the magnitude of the effect of resistance training on muscle thickness of 16.6%, found in study 2. Thus, ultrasonography can be used to monitor changes in quadriceps femoris muscle thickness in healthy adults resulting from resistance training. |

Thus, ultrasonography can be used to monitor changes in quadriceps femoris muscle thickness in healthy adults resulting from resistance training. Submitted by Mirna CEH/B (mirnalindenbaum@gmail.com) on 2022-09-06T14:18:50Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertação - André Luiz Conveniente Soares -2022 - Completa.pdf: 850086 bytes, checksum: 40bd692033e1b5b6437ab1641a06b40f (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2022-09-06T14:18:50Z (GMT).
