Entre o crime e o esporte: a capoeira em impressos no Rio de Janeiro, 1890-1960

The objective of this research is to analyze through printed sources how capoeira existed and in what forms it acted in Rio de Janeiro in the first half of the twentieth century, seeking to identify its most important agents in this period and the causes for the decline of the game-fight after the proclamation of the Republic. By analyzing the printed sources, the research sought to understand how they worked on the capoeira and its respective agents during the period between 1890 and 1960. The laws as official printed sources played a decisive role in the criminal dimension of capoeira. Repression and its respective punishment procedures constituted forces in the shape of capoeira, generating in turn, mechanisms of counter-power and protection of the capoeiras, but at the same time, having a profound impact on the pedagogical processes of the game-fight. Urban reforms have negatively contributed to the development of capoeira, ending the relationships that depended on, or had their former places of work as a spatial factor of their social links and operations. In turn, the exiles, as well as football, also contributed to the decline of capoeira in the first half of the twentieth century. Through printed sources it was found that one of the playful way of capoeira as popular practice used to occur in batuques and batucadas, expressions which had specific rituals and musical aspects together with the samba. Capoeira as sports practice was strongly influenced by guides and methods. In Rio de Janeiro, athletes conducted the process of sportivization of capoeira, unlike Bahia, where masters of capoeira s popular culture actively participated in this process. Through this research it was possible to understand that, in Rio de Janeiro, during the first half of the twentieth century, capoeira as a popular practice, and their respective agents, were between the criminalization and stigmatization of cultural expression, and the practice of the game-fight as a sport.
