Galegos na diáspora: associativismo e atenção aos idosos, o Centro Social de Mayores como caso exemplar

The migration flow of Spaniards towards Brazil between the XIX and XX centuries was marked by the displacement of people, which were seduced by governmental propaganda in different moments seeking better living conditions. The most part came trying to "make America" and followed earlier migration flows by means of contact with friends and relatives. Most Spanish immigrants who came to Rio de Janeiro left the autonomous community of Galicia. In Brazilian territory the Spanish immigrants always sought to establish associations that enabled contact between the community members. In different associative layouts several of these entities had the purpose of assisting the Spaniards who were in conditions of extreme poverty and therefore needed help. The technical and scientific development in several areas of human knowledge made possible the phenomenon of life expectancy increase. The reality of an aging population phenomenon demands public policies of elder care, so that these years are lived fulsome. In the mid-twentieth century Brazil experienced a moment of economic development which attracted many Galicians. These people settled their working relationships here, started a family and aged. The Social Center for the Elderly is a care project targeting elderly people sponsored by the Spanish central government and the Xunta de Galicia (local government of Galicia) and reproduces in Rio de Janeiro an existing model in Spain.
