The search for the greater degree of professional autonomy has been constituted as a challenge for various professions in the health sector, especially for nursing in their injunctions historical and current political situation. The object of this study is defined as professional autonomy of nurses and their social outcomes for students of the undergraduate course in nursing. As a general objective it sought to compare the social representations of the professional autonomy of nurses for first and last period graduate students in Nursing. The following were established as specific objectives: a) to describe the structure and content of social representation of professional autonomy of nurses for first and last period students of the undergraduate nursing course; b) to compare the contents and the internal organization (structure) of social representations on professional autonomy in different groups of students; c) to characterize the training process of concepts on professional autonomy of nurses over the course of graduate studies; d) to analyze the influences of the nurse training process and personal and professional perspectives of future professionals in the construction of social representations of professional autonomy. This is a qualitative, descriptive and exploratory study based on theoretical-methodological assumptions of the Social Representations Theory in its structural approaches and procedures. The participants, students of the first and last graduation periods of the three federal universities located in the metropolitan area of the state of Rio de Janeiro, were addressed by the free evocation technique by sociodemographic questionnaire and in-depth semi-structured interview. The ethical aspects of research involving human subjects set out in Resolution of the National Health Council number 466/12 were respected. Thus, this study was submitted to and approved the Research Ethics Committee at the Fluminense Federal University, and the Rio de Janeiro State University. Data were analyzed using the Four House Technique of operationalized by the software Ensemble des programmes permettant l analyse dês evocations (EVOC 2005), similarity analysis and content analysis software instrumentalized by NVivo 11, the latter in the case of the interviews. As a result, respecting the specificities of each subgroup, the majority of participants identified herself as female, aged 18 to 26 years, low personal income, with monthly family income of 1 to 6 times the minimum wage, without technical training, without family in the nursing profession, having already been cared by nurses and with access to information on nursing care outside the university. It was identified that the social representation of professional autonomy of nurses prepared by students of the first period is a representation, which is; non-autonomous, highly affective and incorporates more elements of common sense, while the one drawn up by students of the last period, in addition to being autonomous, brings together more elements of the reified universe and is the most rational/cognitive. It is concluded urging the need reflections on teaching practices, care, research, teaching and extension related to nursing and their autonomy, for an effective transformation of the profession towards a valued and increasingly professionally autonomous nursing.
