In 2013, the Cadernos de Pesquisa magazine of the Carlos Chagas Foundation obtained the A1 classification, the highest for journals in the Qualis System of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel. With the subtitle Journal of Studies and Research in Education, CP is one of the scientific journals in the area of education that further and more often promotes debates on educational research. Our objective with this research was to identify the main characteristics of the theoretical-methodological debate on "educational research" from the articles published in the aforementioned scientific journal. We start from the hypothesis that the debate between researchers and educators in the area of education has contributed to the development and theoretical-methodological consolidation of educational research in Brazil. We base the development of this research on the philosophical approach of Marx's (2011) historical-dialectical materialism and consider the contributions of Cardoso (1990) on scientific research. In order to identify the contributions of the CP to the debate on educational research, we selected for the study the articles published in this journal that have the descriptor "research" and its plural, more specifically and in depth, the descriptor "educational research ", In a total of one hundred and thirty-nine (139) articles. In this research we also consulted the histories of thirteen (13) periodicals of the area of education in search of articles dealing with "educational research" in order to broaden the possibility of characterization of the theoretical-methodological debate. Our research was composed of four chapters: in the first chapter, we present the foundations of the empirical approach and the historical-dialectical materialist approach to scientific research; In the second chapter we present the social, historical and political world and national context; In the third chapter we deal with the institutionalization of educational research in Brazil and the creation of periodicals in the area of education; In the fourth chapter we characterize the theoretical-methodological debate on educational research in Brazil according to the discussions presented in the CP
