This thesis aims to investigate the intellectual careers of Anatol Rosenfeld and Otto Maria Carpeaux. Exiled in Brazil during the 30s of last century, due to the growing of Nazi-fascism in Europe, the German-born Rosenfeld and Austrian-born Carpeaux refashioned their lives at the new country, becoming two of the more renowned Brazilian critics. In addition to that, this thesis will focus on analyzing the relationship between exile and intellectual activity, coming up with a reflection about the locus of the cities of Berlin and Vienna for the intellectual background of Rosenfeld and Carpeaux. This study will also examine their first Brazilian books and the reception they got from their hosts, outlining the contours of a complex intellectual atmosphere marked by a sort of "literary cordiality." As a final objective, this thesis will discuss the self-fashioning process through which both critics had improved their own individuality, becoming, finally, figures whose memory should be preserved.
