This dissertation approaches the topic of the group from Teatro Rural do Estudante, created in 1952 in Campo Grande, district of Rio de Janeiro City, at the time the rural zone of the city. The TRE was inspired in Paschoal Carlos Magno s ideal and intended to allow the residents of the region to have access to art and culture. The focus of the analysis is the play Zé do Pato exhibited in 1957, written by Elza Pinho Osborne. The play presents aspects of the decadence of the traditional oligarchic elite by the end of the XIXth century and beginning of the XXth. This topic enabled to discuss the contrapositions between the economic liberalism implemented by the Brazilian elite and the requirements of the European civil and politic liberalism. The modernization process of the period is also analyzed. New social actors emerged and the inherent characteristics of Campo Grande created the ideal conditions for this cultural initiative. Produced and exhibited in the 50s in Campo Grande, Zé do Pato is an important document about the social transformations imposed by modernity in the period
