Que paraíso é esse?: a turismização da Ilha Grande

Two events marked the recent history of Ilha Grande (Angra dos Reis, RJ): the institution of environmental laws with the creation of four units of natural conservation between the years of 1971 and 1990; and the intensification of touristic flow after the implosion of the Candido Mendes Criminal Institute (1994) that marked the end of almost 100 years of a penitentiary system. From this moment on, the Island always associated with natural beauty and the idea of paradise, is not anymore referred as paradise-hell and becomes known predominantly for its landscape potential, focusing on tourism which becomes the main component of its life. By reconstituting the tourism path at the Island and considering the current picture of touristic activities (from my participation in forums for discussion and resolution of Island issues, from researches and newspapers and from interviews with locals and forums participants), I show the meanings and visions of the Ilha Grande Paradise and the tourism, what exists and what is desired, at the speeches and representation levels as well as the practical level and the social relations. It is revealed a field of dispute between different social actors with differed with diverse interests to save and explore Ilha Grande, where nature and tourism are two elements used as survival strategies of the majority of the population and as a political strategy of the government, a paradise marked by tourism and a paradise for tourism. I read the occurrence and the implications of tourism in Ilha Grande through the idea of tourismization in analogy of the thoughts of Norbert Elias about the civilizing process of J. S. Leite Lopes about environmentalization and recognizing the dialogues and shock between the tourismization process and the environmentalization process in Ilha Grande.
