Resumo: | The objective of this thesis is to analyze the perceptions that the members of high-level female Brazilian judo have about the sport. After exclusive interviews with high-level female judo athletes, I developed three chapters. The analyses made through these interviews have the intention of filling the visibility gap and giving voice to the empowered women of this sport. In the first chapter, I will relate the story of coach Rosicleia Campos from the time of her transition to coach in 2000, until 2012. The objective of this chapter is to identify and interpret the perceptions of the female judo Brazilian Selection s coach since her arrival as coach in 2000 until the Olympic gold medal win in 2012. Rosicleia Campos was interviewed and spoke about her transition from athlete to coach, about the difficulties of keeping the position, and about how she reconciled her personal life with her professional life. The analytical categories are difficulties confronted , available alternatives and decisions made . The study finds that Rosicleia Campos broke the glass ceiling that makes it difficult for women to reach high positions in the sport. In the second chapter, I will relate the history of the life of Edinanci Silva, from her arrival to elite levels in 1994 until her last appearance in the Olympic Games in 2008. The objective is to interpret her contribution to the sport as an athlete as well as her identity trajectory. In the interview, Edinanci retraced her arrival to the elite level and the prejudices she suffered integrating into the female judo Brazilian Team. The categories difficulties , opportunities and training were selected for analysis. Edinanci Silva experienced biased and prejudicial situations on and off the mat, but her capacity to overcome helped to make her the female judo athlete with the most Olympic Games and participation in international championships. The objective of the third chapter is to analyze the perceptions the female judo Brazilian Selection athletes have about their femininity. Ten athletes were interviewed, and in addition to the interviews four training sessions of the Brazilian Team were observed at the Brazilian Confederation of Judo s training center in Rio de Janeiro. The athletes showed that there is a reframing of their perceptions about femininity, especially when considering the necessity of having a body type that questions the social perceptions and values of what it means to have a feminine body. The results of this thesis indicate that elite female judo is advancing. However, the difficulties presented by Rosicleia Campos, Edinanci Silva and the athletes of the Brazilian Selection demonstrate that there is still not a complete acceptance of the role of women in this sport. The results of the analysis also show that it is necessary to verify to what extent the advances in female judo participation are results of individual actions by key leaders of the sport, and to investigate what social price the athletes pay to create their own careers. |

Submitted by Boris Flegr (boris@uerj.br) on 2021-01-05T18:42:13Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Gabriela Conceicao de Souza_Tese.pdf: 662300 bytes, checksum: 31ab6fef9fe78d288c1d23563e0b9f83 (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2021-01-05T18:42:13Z (GMT).
