Drawing has existed as a discipline of basic education in Brazil since the end of the Second Reign and has its importance recognized by professionals and researchers of education and related areas. Nevertheless, the educational goals pertinent to this discipline have fluctuated according to educational currents and political interests, culminating in periods of absence in the formal curriculum. The teaching of Drawing in Brazil is confined to select schools, public or private, whose access and permanence are conditioned to strict selective processes as well as the payment of substantial school fees, beyond the reach of most Brazilian families. Based on her teaching experience in the discipline, the author identifies the relevance of the teaching of Design for forming the the students, aiming to their future professional activity and for enhancing the social appreciation of knowledge regarding the production of material culture. This conjecture is strengthened by the increase in the number of non-formal pedagogical initiatives that are based on the transcription, into reality, of models that exist only as ideas, by means of the representation of form. These projects attempt at, indirectly, filling the gap left by the loss of representativeness of the teaching of Design in formal education. The dissertation presents a review of the contents, objectives and competences of graphic education at the Fundamental and Middle-School levels in Brazil. Based on this review, a curricular proposal guided by the stages of development foreseen in the Bloom Taxonomy is presented. Complementarily, a discussion agenda on an overal employment of Drawing in the Brazilian education system is suggested. It is intended to guide the dialogue both educators and civil society, regarding the formalization of the development of skills and competences in graphic expression, to make them accessible to all Brazilians.
