Resumo: Feminism as an organized movement is now more than a century old and already has its place in the academy through literary theory and criticism, in addition to having been consolidated in literature. Activists have been able to express themselves even in the digital environment, in which they have gained popularity. This PhD dissertation presents a historical and epistemological study of the feminist movement and the literature written by women of a feminist nature in the United States from the 19th century to the present day. It is, at first, a documentary and bibliographic research of the theoretical and literary frameworks that constitute this movement and its manifestations throughout its history. This exploration is performed on the basis of the conventionally accepted division of the movement into first, second, third and fourth waves. Thus, the philosophical thought created by women who wanted to change the "condition of women" in American society in the mentioned period is contained in this study. Political movement, theory and literature meet, revealing that feminists militate on several fronts. In the second part of this dissertation, the work of the American writer and activist Roxane Gay is presented. The analysis consists of realising in what ways the issue of sexual violence, both in her fictional and non-fictional work, is explored. Rape and its aftermath are studied in her works of fiction – An untamed state (2014); in the short stories “Things I know about fairy tales” and “Sweet on the tongue”, from the collection Ayiti, published in 2011 and relaunched in 2018; “I will follow you” and “La negra blanca”, from her short stories book Difficult women (2017) – and in her essays and autobiographical texts contained in Bad feminist (2014) and Hunger (2017). Pain and trauma mark their characters and her own life story, allowing us to find, hence, a parallel between reality and fiction
