This paper presents the biography of Alexandre de Gusmão, emphasizing their various writings. From a case study was intended to examine issues relating to the Portuguese Empire, as well as topics on colonial family, Jesuit education in Brazil, and the literati of the Johannine time. Specifically highlighted the functioning of the university structure of Coimbra and the creation of the Royal Academy of Portuguese History, since the trajectory of Gusmão was linked to these institutions. We also sought to explore the participation of Gusmão in the negotiations of the Treaty of Utrecht, in the law that ended the House of Minas Gerais and the Foundry, in what I consider one of his most significant achievements, the development and articulation of the Treaty of Madrid. Character peculiar trajectory began his training in the colony, found it in Portugal, like many men of his time, but achieved a unique importance in the structure of the Portuguese Empire. Influenced by the new French ideas, and the knowledge acquired during their stay in the Roman Curia, was a traveler to his diplomatic career service, actively participating in major events of European life. Throughout this exuberant participation in the political life of his time, can be regarded as a synthesis of his own time.
