Orientação de futuro de jovens moradores de uma comunidade na cidade do Rio de Janeiro submetida a políticas públicas de segurança: relação com variáveis psicológicas e socioculturais

The current dissertaton is based on the evolutionary perspective of Psychology and focuses on strategies that guide human behavior and future expectations. According to this perspective, the processes and mechanisms that make up a human mind are selected to respond in an adaptive way to contextual variables. Considering the ontogenetic process, young people can take risks according to an unpredictable environment in which they live. This behavior may also vary according to gender and individual experiences, among other environmental variables. This study intends to analyze how the transformations that have occurred in a favela can influence future expectations and the behaviors of young people living in the context. The focus of this research will be Rocinha, which was pacified in November 2011 and received a Peacekeeping Police Unit (UPP) in 2012. The objectives of the study are: to analyze how the young people of Rocinha perceive the community before and after the pacification process and implementation of the UPP; to assess the safety and satisfaction in the context, the experience of violence and to evaluate the relationship of this perception with the participants orientation towards the future. The participants were 120 young men and women, aged between 16 and 30 years old. Forty of them were recruited prior to the pacification process and implementation of the UPP and the other 80 afterwards. The hypothesis of this study is that differences will be found between the groups before and after the UPP for the following variables: future discounting, exposure to violence, and evaluation of the context, regarding violence and availability of resources. The results showed that there are no significant differences betrween the two groups for the studied variables, before and after UPP in Rocinha. There was only one significant difference regarding the context, concerning resource availability, showing that, after the Pacification Process, the context was more favorably evaluated by the young people. Despite the difference, the expected transformations with UPP process did not seem to have reached the idealized goal of the program. Therefore, the perception of young people about the context did not change in relation to other aspects besides resources availability. There were no observed differences in relation to future discounting. The continuation of the UPP program is necessary in order to fully reach the goals and the context be more favorable perceived by young residents of Rocinha that may use more long term strategies in their lives. It is hoped that the information obtained through this dissertaton project may benefit professionals focused on public policies and health promotion, suggesting important directions for young people and access to better living conditions
