Resumo: | Introduction: work is one of the social determinants of health, it dignifies life, but can also pose risks inherent to the kind of work involved. Practitioners of Nursing working in emergency services experience adverse conditions, which lead to physical and mental illness. These risks are dynamic and their characteristics are changeable, given the demographic transition and epidemiological scenario. The current epidemiological situation caused by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) and the gaps in data bases on the subject warrant studies to evaluate related harm to, and repercussions on, these workers’ health. The overall objective was to describe the health repercussions perceived by emergency service Nursing workers as resulting from their work during the pandemic. The specific objectives were to draw up a sociodemographic, labour and clinical profile, identify the words representing positive and negative repercussions and their main relations with the job and to categorise the health repercussions perceived by these workers. Method: the setting for this qualitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study was emergency services nationwide. The study population was the Nursing personnel. The qualitative content analysis was informed by textual statistics, descending hierarchical classification and analysis of similarities. The study was approved by Brazil’s national research committee. Results: in the 18 interviews analysed, participant mean age was 34.77 years. Most had two or more jobs (66.67%), worked in the national health service (88.88%), under statutory contract (38.88%), temporary contract (27.77%), 50% reported not having been tested for COVID-19, but having pre-existing health problems, and 83.33% were working in Brazil’s Southeast region. Connectedness was found between the most significant words (p < 0.0001) and the study categories established were: Nursing workers’ exposure to risk of contamination, illness and transmission of the COVID-19 virus resulting from lack or inadequacy of PPEs; Changes in the environment, in processes and in work relations in emergency services; and Physical, mental and psychosocial alterations perceived by the nursing workers in these services. Conclusion: the pandemic has resignified the way society and Nursing workers themselves see the risks inherent to emergency service activities, as well as the repercussions on nursing personnel’s health. The health effects described by the workers were: disturbance of eating patterns, physical tiredness, fatigue and increased smoking, anxiety, alteration in sleep patterns, fear, exhaustion, stress, social isolation, loneliness, distancing from family and social stigma. |

Submitted by Kárin CB/B (karin@uerj.br) on 2023-01-06T16:38:05Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertação - Elaine Cristine da Conceição Vianna - 2022 - Completa.pdf: 2790878 bytes, checksum: 965ec283d2de9a598961a7375f104e4f (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2023-01-06T16:38:05Z (GMT). Introduction: work is one of the social determinants of health, it dignifies life, but can also pose risks inherent to the kind of work involved. |
