Educação, memória e esquecimento: uma análise das narrativas museológicas sobre a escravidão

Resumo: The central theme of this research is slavery representation in museum spaces. In dialogue with Paul Ricoeur (1994), I argue that museums, through its various resources – collections, exhibitions, mediations –, produce narratives that prompt certain meanings about slavery. In order to understand the meanings mobilized by such narratives, I mapped the museums dedicated to slavery in Brazil. After identifying the institutions, I analyzed, based on the images of the collections available online and the posts made on their social media platforms, the representations offered by the museums. In order to zoom in on the problematics and issues related to the representation of slavery, I conducted a case study of Museu do Escravo (The Slave Museum), located in the city of Belo Vale, State of Minas Gerais. The following factors played a part in choosing this institution: its typology – history; its public status – it is a municipal museum; its longevity – it was founded in 1977. From analyzing the exhibitions and interviewing the institution's representatives, I identified that, like other museum institutions, the representations brought forth by the museum are permeated by issues regarding: the recognition of slavery as a sensitive topic; the identification of racism as a factor that impacts how people relate to the memory of slavery; and budget limitations to carry out the work. The analysis of the work developed by said institution also showed its attempt to dialogue with issues raised both by historiography and by social movements with a focus on memories related to slavery. Furthermore, I observed the impact of the contemporary conception of museum education on the approach adopted by the institution, in light of the proposal to strengthen the museum as a place for debate and critical reflection on both the past and the present.

Defendo, a partir do diálogo com Paul Ricoeur (1994), que os museus, lançando mão de múltiplos recursos – acervos, exposições, mediações – produzem narrativas que mobilizam determinados sentidos sobre a escravidão. A fim de compreender os significados mobilizados por tais narrativas, realizei um mapeamento dos museus dedicados ao tema no Brasil. Após a identificação das instituições, analisei, tendo como base as imagens dos acervos disponíveis na internet e as publicações realizadas em suas respectivas redes sociais, as representações elaboradas por tais museus. A fim de aproximar o olhar das problemáticas e questões relacionadas à representação da escravidão, empreendi um estudo de caso com foco no Museu do Escravo, localizado na cidade de Belo Vale, em Minas Gerais. A escolha da instituição ocorreu por razão dos seguintes fatores: a tipologia do museu - história; o caráter público - museu municipal; a longevidade - fundado em 1977. A partir da análise das exposições e das entrevistas com os representantes da instituição, identifiquei que, assim como outros museus, as representações elaboradas pelo Museu do Escravo perpassam por questões relacionadas ao reconhecimento da escravidão como tema sensível; à identificação do racismo como um fator que impacta o modo como as pessoas se relacionam com a memória da escravidão; e às dificuldades orçamentárias para realização do trabalho. A análise do trabalho desenvolvido pela instituição analisada indicou também a tentativa de diálogo com questões suscitadas tanto pela historiografia quanto pelos movimentos sociais que têm como foco as memórias relacionadas à escravidão.
