Eyelid and periorbital surgery became a surgical subspecialty approximately forty - five years ago with the creation of the American, Brazilian and European societies of this specialty after important surgeons introduced techniques that are the basis of procedures in use in eyelid surgery today. The progress of anatomical information has contributed to the development of new reconstructive and aesthetic surgical procedures. Many cases of patients submitted to both reconstructive and aesthetic surgery were evaluated in the last forty years. These cases include eyelid lesions, entropion, ectropion, eyelid tumors, anophthalmic eyelid sockets, proptosis, blepharoplasties, orbital eskeletonization and canthoplasties. The evaluation of the results of the cases presented, from cases of complex reconstruction to simple blepharoplasties, reveal the very low rate of complications and the accuracy of the techniques employed. Recent advances in anatomical studies of the periorbital area have contributed to the development of important surgical techniques that have transformed the treatment of many deformities. The employment of these modern surgical techniques and the frequent association of techniques have greatly improved results and reduced risks and complications. These well-defined and established techniques are effective, safe and simple to reproduce.
