The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the photographs attached to the files of the National Security Court (TSN) about the 1935 Communist Revolt and the persecution of communist militants that followed this historical event in order to identify the construction of social representations about the 1935 insurrection and communism. As a chronological cut, we will use as temporal references the 1930s until 1945, when the activities of the TSN were terminated, whose institutional activities were directly linked to the search for the support of the Getúlio Vargas Government in the legal field. In terms of academic relevance, this thesis presents an innovative proposal for the analysis of a source little explored in the research on the November 1935 insurrections, something that allows the broadening of the view on this theme, besides generating an interdisciplinary perspective of approach. We used as methodological tools for the development of the analysis of the photographs, the Visual Culture in its concept of visuality and the Peircian semiotics in its understanding of photography as an index. About the results obtained in the development of the thesis, we could see that a process of construction of a discourse that stigmatized the 1935 Communist Revolt and the Communist militants was carried out. In this context, the TSN acted in conjunction with other sectors of public administration and civil society in the production and dissemination of representations about the communist uprising and communism, being supported in the discursive and political aspect by the anti-communism that raged in different sectors of our society.
