This research aims to investigate the presence of typical narrative elements of Gothic literature — such as the return of the past, the locus horribilis and the monstrous character —in Lúcio Cardoso’s novellas. The thesis hypothesis is that the author made extensive use of typical procedures of Gothic in his fictional production. We intended, therefore, to identify and describe the presence of such elements in the Cardosianwork, many of which have already been recognized, but in an unsystematic way, by the Brazilian literary studies. As a secondary objective, we will undertake an investigation on how the Gothic was perceived, described and named by the journalistic critic of the twentieth century and by academic researchers, as well as an inquire on why there are few works on this poetics in Lúcio Cardoso. As a theoretical basis for the definition of the concept of Gothic, we will start from the works of David Punter (1996), Fred Botting (1996), David Stevens (2000) and Júlio França (2015). Likewise, the studies by the following Lúcio Cardoso scholars will be equally enlightening: Mario Carelli (1988), Fernando Monteiro de Barros (2004) and Cássia dos Santos (2008)
