The dissertation analyzes the PNAD food security data for the years 2004, 2009 and 2013, showing the different dynamics of households with children and adolescents compared to those in which there are only adults. It was also analyzed the relationships between food insecurity and income transfers, poverty and inequality. There was a significant improvement in the levels of food security of households with children and adolescents in the analyzed period, but the situation is still unfavorable in those domiciliary units that, generally, have lower per capita income. The methodology of the Brazilian scale of food insecurity produces a significant difference in per capita income levels of households with children and adolescents in relation to domiciliary units in which there are only adults, households with children and adolescents have lower average per capita income in all levels of food insecurity (mild, moderate and severe), which suggests a greater vulnerability of income. In logistic regression models, the effects of income transfers reduce the likelihood of severe food insecurity, but it doesn’t reduce the likelihood of food insecurity in the regression for all levels of food insecurity. One possible explanation is that income transfers are able to alleviate food insecurity, but they are not enough to eradicate it. It was concluded that there was a significant improvement in the levels of food security in the analyzed period, which greatly favored poor households with children and adolescents. However, the situation is still unfavorable in these households, especially in the domiciliary units with children in early childhood.
