Resumo: | A bibliographical review on design reveals the frequency with which different authors begin their texts with the conceptualization of the area. From the analysis of several views about the field, we identified the existence of three dichotomies: design versus production; theory versus practice; design versus use. There is a naturalized understanding of design as being only the design stage, when a creator idealizes and plans a product. It is understood that creativity inhabits this phase, with production being the mere reproduction of a previously defined plan, whereas usage seems to be understood as a consequence, but in a passive way. This thesis aims to offer a design concept that surpasses such dichotomies, since they do not find support in experience. To do this, we use concepts such as the philosophy of Charles Sanders Peirce to understand the processes of creation, production, use and post-use in design. Such a choice is justified by the fact that this philosopher's thought is so original that it can contribute to breaking the inheritance of a polarized understanding of the world. Peirce opposed a deterministic and dualistic thought in proposing an evolutionary philosophy, which presupposes that there are continuities in the universe. Such thinking makes it possible to conceive a changing world in which chance does not cease to act, learning is possible and knowledge evolves. In this sense, Peircean philosophy treats the universe in a connected way, by understanding theory and practice, internal and external, thought and action as continuities rather than oppositions. Moreover, since the etymology of the word design includes the idea of creating meaning, nothing more appropriate than analyzing it from the perspective of an eminently semiotic philosophy. In this thesis we deal with the process of creation in design, approaching the question of creativity, methodology and production in the light of Peircean phenomenology and metaphysics, to propose the idea that production is part of design. We also study design as a phenomenon of representation, as a sign. Based on Peircean semiotics, we approach the question of rhetoric and polysemy in design, discussing creativity in the use of the product. Finally, we emphasize the consequences of design for society and for the environment, from the moment concepts become existences that gain autonomy in the world. With this purpose, we present Peircean pragmatism, which understands actions as the outer side of ideas, and concepts as the inner side of actions, in order to rethink the dichotomy theory and practice. We also discuss the fixation of beliefs and learning, and emphasize the importance of a sense of responsibility in design, since in the division of sciences proposed by Peirce ethics is one of the normative sciences that underlie semiotics. And, as Peirce's theory shows us the network of thought connections that contribute to the evolution of knowledge in a society, we approach the process of co-creation. The aim of this research was thus to contribute one more step to the studies of this field, based on Charles Sanders Peirce’s philosophy of design. |

The aim of this research was thus to contribute one more step to the studies of this field, based on Charles Sanders Peirce’s philosophy of design. Submitted by Marianna CTC/G (marianna.uerj@gmail.com) on 2021-12-03T18:35:43Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Tese - Raquel Ferreira da Ponte - 2017 - Completa.pdf: 7495529 bytes, checksum: 5a6175cde394e26a2240d9a2183a798a (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2021-12-03T18:35:43Z (GMT).
