During the dark period in which the Inquisition expanded its claws, homosexuals were persecuted and, under the charge of "heresy of the flesh," many were burned at the stake. They were heretics because they corrupted the "natural law" of sex, a law that decreed complementarity between the male and female sex and its procreative purpose. Long after these fires have died out, we see the march for "gay rights" reverberating in the media. Discussions at the legal and the social level are currently taking place, focusing on discriminatory practices and also on the rights to express oneself sexually according to one's own will. Heresy, etymologically, means a position, a choice. And the notion of unconscious choice lies at the heart of the analytic theory: choice of neurosis, choice of object, choice of symptom... And even choice of sexual position. Psychoanalysis has played an important role in theorizing about sex and sexual identities, which brings it to the forefront of the liberal movement and to the focus of studies on sexuality. Freud's ideas about homosexuality cover a long list of topics from the Oedipus complex to clinical structures, implying the foundation of the unconscious desire. And, similarly, the concept of drive seems to be fundamental in this discussion, provoking a chain of theoretical developments that culminates in the deconstruction of any cultural, sociological or biological model of sexuation. Lacan contributed enormously to this, for his famous quantum formulas will strike the final blow to preconceptions about the sexes. The great secret of psychoanalysis, contained in Freud's saying and clearly announced by Lacan, reveals the inexistence of sexual relation. Lacan s logical formulas determine two heterogeneous fields of enjoyment, positions to be chosen in the sharing of the sexes. And in addition to this use of logic, Lacan used topology to represent a conception of psychic reality as a Brunnian chain. Psychical reality, that is, sexual reality, would be structured by a saying, by a choice in act, that founds the Sinthome and the chain of the three registers, R, S, and I - echoing as héresie .
