The work presents several characteristics of street carnival, with some references from the past that are manifested through the free Carnival groups, with the centrality in the carnival block Cordão do Boi Tolo, proposing to debate these demonstrations dialoguing with urban geographic concepts and conceptions. The elements presented will develop into a permanent struggle by Cordão do Boi Tolo for the right to public spaces for the carnival occupation, whether through street parades or through other events, taking into account subjective relationships; of identities, representations and meanings in the construction of the common places. The work also analyzes the impositions of the state, over the last few years, in an attempt to control the carnival blocks, official or not, and the response by the Desliga dos Blocos, a movement that support the freedom of street carnival. Stories and records of parades of Cordão do Boi Tolo in partnership with other blocks, in different locations in the city. The limitations and contradictions inserted in these processes of disputes, mediations and ruptures. And finally, the socio-spatial strategies that the block built for its own survival and overcoming. The research procedure through bibliographic survey, analysis of legislation that regulated the carnival in the past and in the present. We hope with the work to bring together the different forms of urban occupations through the carnival celebrations throughout recent history, with several contradictions, among some categories and geographical concepts, pointing out the different norms that interfered in the freedom, spontaneity and playfulness of this grandiose party.
